Clash over grampanchayat pradhan election in Raiganj – The Statesman

Over the issue of electing pradhan in Gauri Grampanchyat, Raiganj of North Dinajpur district today, the Congress members divided in two groups and involved in a clash in which five people including the pradhan Mr Baren Roy were hurt. The protesting congress members destroyed the Mr Baran Roy’s car .In order to disperse the mob, police had to resort to mild lathicharge.
Congress had bagged 10 seats and CPI(M) 6 out of total 16 seats of the panchyat this year. Yesterday district Congress leaders had a meeting where they decided to make Mr Baren Roy the pradhan of Gauri Grampanchyat. But a section of Congress members of the region could not accept this decision.
This morning when Mr Roy along with other panchyat members of Congress truned up in front of the grampanchyat office, a section of Congress protesters intercepted his car .When Mr Roy got down from car they beat up him and injured him. In the meantime another group who were in favour of Mr Roy counter attacked. Both groups pelted stones at each other in which four people were injured. They were taken to Raiganj district hospital.
Mr Supriya Das, BDO Raiganj said: “The incident took place out the panchayat premises.”ought stern measure against the police.
