Delhi-Radhikapur Seemanchal Express flagged off – The Statesman

Monday, January 5th, 2009

The Delhi-Radhikapur Seemanchal (link) weekly express train today started from Radhikapur amid great fanfare. Several thousand people thronged Radhikapur, Kaliyaganj and Raiganj railway stations to greet the new express train. Mr BK Das, the traffic inspector of NF Railway, Katihar, and Mr KS Chaudhury, the senior railway manager of NF Railway, Katihar, flagged off the train from Radhikapur and Raiganj railway stations respectively.
The enthusiasm of the people was somewhat dampened at Raiganj, however, as Congress supporters and CPI-M activists got into an altercation over credit for the introduction of the new train. The Congress leaders thanked Union minister Mr Priya Ranjan Das Munshi while the CPI-M gave credit to both Union railway minister Mr Lalu Prashad and the chairman of the railway standing committee and CPI-M MP Mr Basudeb Acharia. Police had to be despatched to control the situation.
The CPI-M activists also expressed dissatisfaction with the train’s timings and facilities and submitted a memorandum to Mr Chaudhury in this regard.

Promised train service misses deadline – The Statesman

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

The unfulfilled promise of starting a new express train service between Radhikapur, a station near the Bangladesh border of North Dinajpur district and Anand Vihar Railway Station in Delhi has irked the locals here. The service was promised in the last Railway Budget and has not been started yet.
The former Union information and broadcasting minister, Mr Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi, had said during the Pujas in Raiganj that the service would be inaugurated in the first week of November. “More than a month has passed since the announced date of inauguration but the railway authorities are yet to do anything in this regard,” the locals said.
With Mr Dasmunshi still indisposed, the locals are unsure when would the service start and would it start at all.
The Railway authorities had in the month of June identified the promised train as 2019 UP and 2020 DN Delhi -Radhikapur express and sent a time table at a glance and the construction of an extra platform at Raiganj Railway station had also begun at the same time raising hopes. The construction now remains stalled, which has created further disappointment among the locals.
The secretary of West Dinajpur Chambers of Commerce, Mr Jainarayan Somani, said: “Around 1 lakh labourers from different blocks of North Dinajur district go to Delhi for work. Apart from this, a large number of residents visit Delhi for business. The train would benefit all but the project work seems to dampened after Mr Dasmunshi fell ill.”
“We shall send a letter to the Railway minister Mr Laloo Prasad urging him to take immediate measure to start the service,” said Mr Tapan Chaudhury, a zonal railway users’ consultative committee member of the NF Railway.
The station superintendent of Raiganj railway station, Mr Manajitmoy Dutta said: “We received the proposed timetable of the train in June but we are not aware when the service would begin.”

Passengers left in lurch by NF Railway decision – The Statesman

Friday, May 16th, 2008

Passengers on the route between Radhikapur, a station near Indo-Bangla border under Kaliyaganj police station of North Dinajpur, and Katihar in Bihar are faced with aserious problem after NF Railway’s decision to suspend few trains on this route for a fortnight from 18 May due to some work on the tracks in Katihar. The difficulties will be intensified as North Dinajpur administration has already seized almost all the passenger vehicles plying on different routes for polls to be held on 18 May in North Dinajpur district.
After hearing this problem Mr Parimal Roy, a businessman in Kaliyaganj said: “Two trains are moving between Radhikapur and Katihar for years. We depend on these trains whenever there is some problem with other modes of transport. All public transport is already off the road due to polls and termination of the train services has left us in lurch. Moreover, the withdrawl of trains will also cause inconvenience to patients who go to Raiganj from remote areas in our district.”
One of the members of Zonal Railway Users Consultative committee of NF Railway Mr Tapan Chaudhury said: “Reportedly NF Railway authorities will take a fortnight to complete their work on the tracks in Katihar. In the meantime the train service could be continued between Barsoi-Radhikapur without withdrawing train services. We will request the NF Railway officials to take measures so that service between Barsoi and Radhikapur remain unaffected.
The senior Station Manager of Raiganj Railway station Mr Manajitmoy Dutta said: “The train services will be wihtdrawn due to inter-linking of track in Katihar. The number of trains, which will stop plying, will be published in our notice board tomorrow.
