Police screens film to prevent trafficking

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

RAIGANJ, March 11: In order to combat trafficking of women in north Dinajpur district, administration has begun screening a documentary film in different blocks of the district since yesterday Mrs Shila Dutta, a woman of Jadavpur in Kolkata has produced the film on her own. Most of the characters in the film are from the district.
The documentary film was screened yesterday afternoon at Panchal village. The documentary has also been screened at Kaliyaganj Municipality and at Najmu Mancha today. The documentary has also been screened at Islampur ywo days ago. The screenings are said to have attracted a huge crowd.
Reportedly in last few years hundreds women, most of whom were teenaged girls, have been trafficked to other states from the district.Though police rescued 13 girls from different states, majority of the trafficked girls still remain untraced. The roots of women trafficking reached went so deep that north Dinajpur district police beg-an to spread awareness among the residents.
The north Dinajpur police super Mr SB Purnapatra said: “After conducting inquiry we found that the women and girls who were trafficked had been misled with false promises of good jobs or marriage. In some cases either the husbands of the trafficked women or some of their neighbour were involved.
“So we started an appeal in a local TV channel in which the guardians are being told to inform police just before handingover their daughters to any person. This documentary prepared by Mrs Dutta will also help police to make the guardians conscious.
Reportedly, another documentary by Mrs Dutta will be shown in south Dinajpur district where the girls are trafficked through the non-fenced zone of Indo-Bangladesh border. The way of trafficking would be highlighted there.”

Monday, March 10th, 2008

RAIGANJ, March 10: West Bengal Socialist Party has decided to demand more seats in north Dinajpur district in panchayt polls this year. If the Left Front fails to fulfill their demands they will fight alone for which they have started to consolidate their position in north Dinajpur district.
It seemed to the members of West Bengal Socialist party of north Dinajpur district committee that Left Front may not pay heed to their demands so they have started a booth wise survey in the district.
In last two days the state secretary of West Bengal Socialist party and state fishery minister Mr Kiranmay Nanda conducted booth wise survey in different villages of Raiganj, Hemtabad, Itahar and Kaliyaganj and reportedly, suggested the members to prepare the ground for lonely fight for coming panchayat poll.
This morning while speaking to the media persons Mr Nanda said: “Last year the Left Front committee wanted to offer us only those seats where Congress was very strong. So we did not accept their proposal and we had to fight alone and our nine gram panchayat nominees won. Two of them were made upapradhan. In last five years our strength has doubled in the district.
“So we will demand some selected seats this year. If Left Front fails to offer us the same we will fight alone from there. If congress gets benefit we will have nothing to do. In last five years we have changed the socio-economic scenario of the villages of north Dinajpur after introducing vast pisciculture.
Numerous villagers have been made a part of the income generating scheme. Apart from north Dinajpur, in all the districts of the state we are preparing to fight alone in panchayat poll. Our district leaders have instructed to identify the places where our ogranisation is very strong. Our candidates will contest only from such places, added Mr Nanda.
